OF GHOSTS

ABOUT
THE PROJECT

[Project Type: Editorial Design]
[Date: May 2021]

The layout design for «Not Afraid of Ghosts», a research book by Yulia Fisch, curator at Fotomuseum Winterthur, explores how monuments fit into collective memory and dominant historical narratives. The research uses «ghosts» as a metaphor for memories that have been forgotten or overlooked but still matter today.

The design of the book reflects this idea by using large, solid blocks of text that represent the strength and stability of historical narratives. However, these blocks are occasionally broken by quotes, showing how these seemingly unshakable stories can be interrupted, just like forgotten memories can break through.

This layout creates a visual balance between stability and disruption, helping the reader understand how fragile history can be. The design not only supports the book’s ideas but also brings the theme of hidden, forgotten histories to life in a simple, yet meaningful way.
